Healthy Families

The Gay & Lesbian Fund supports programs that serve the needs of children, youth, and families. Because we want to be holistic in our treatment, our funding can be used to provide for the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health of our target populations.

When considering programs to support, we like partners to show evidence of cultural competency for families of nontraditional composition such as single parent households, grandparents as primary caregivers, and same-gender parent households. Cultural competency includes awareness, attitude, knowledge, and the skills-set needed to effectively meet the needs of our target populations.

The success stories of our Healthy Families grantees are numerous.

  • Growing Home helped a single mom acquire financial assistance, food, and housing so that she could better care for her children and escape an abusive relationship.
  • Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation helped Amber Maldonado abandon a life of drugs and alcohol for a college education and a career in counseling.
  • Care and Share Food Bank distributed 11.3 million pounds of food to 99,000 people through human service agencies and sister food banks in Southern Colorado in 2008.

Growing Home

Growing Home was founded by a group of nurses and citizens concerned about suburban homelessness. Today, Growing Home offers a number of services to families in need such as a homeless prevention program to help families on the brink of living on the street, a referral service program to guide families toward utility, food, and much more.
